Make some time for you
So it’s halfway through the year and what have you achieved?
What have you done to make an impact – on yourself or others?
It’s easy to get swept up in the day to day tasks of work and life and you don’t notice how quickly time passes. It’s important to press pause every once in a while, take stock of where you are at, and really think about how far you have come – or have you not progressed at all?
Take, for example, my New Year’s resolutions. It seems like only last week I was writing them – and in 6 months how many have I actually achieved? Should be at least half by now – it definitely isn’t! In fact I’ve only done 2 out of 10. Why is this? It feels like I’ve not had enough time but if I’m being completely honest with myself it’s because I’ve not made the time. There are a lot of wasted hours in my evenings spent watching TV!
And the same goes for achievements at work. You need to make the time for personal development. I know that there are things that I have in my personal development plan that I wanted to achieve in 6 months and I haven’t. When it’s busy it’s easy to push back the things that do not directly affect your job.
Developing yourself may not seem as important as the other tasks – but it is! You directly affect your job! It may only be an hour every week to work on your own projects but if you don’t set the time aside it won’t happen at all.
So I’m really going try to make the second half of this year count. I have started by setting up regular meetings to discuss my development with my line manager.
How are you going to achieve what you want to in the next 6 months?
